We make sure the puppies are well fed and sleepy before attempting to trim their nails. It's a brand new experience and they have no clue what we're doing so we want them to be as relaxed as possible before starting. Here is Mr. Brown at less than 1 week old with his first nail trim.
It's important for their mom's comfort and safety to keep them short so they don't scratch her, but it's also equally important to get the puppies used to having their paws handled and nails trimmed as it's part of their routine care. They'll continue with weekly nail trims so they'll grow up to be well adjusted dogs who could care less that they have their nails cut!
As the puppies grow up, they have their nails trimmed at least once per week. Here is Mr. Brown at 5 weeks old having his nails trimmed.
As they puppies get older and their nails get larger, we start to introduce them to nail clippers in addition to the nail grinder so they are exposed to all the different ways their nails may be trimmed.
