This is more than just an adorable puppy pile. You're actually seeing that the puppies have learned where their 'sleep nest' is!
Why is that important? Because dogs instinctively don't want to use the bathroom where they sleep. Using their natural instincts, we're helping to build that initial foundation for potty training by designating a specific place to sleep. Puppies at this age aren't "using a potty area," instead they're "moving off the nest to eliminate."
When puppies understand an area is meant for sleep, they tend to potty elsewhere so it's very helpful for them to start learning that now so we can eventually add a designated potty area to their pen.
Around 3 weeks old the puppies have learned what a sleep nest is so now we can add litter trays for them to use. In the beginning, it's all about catching the puppies before they use the bathroom and placing them on the litter trays to do their business. They learn extremely fast that the trays are the place for them to use the bathroom.
Within days the puppies understand the concept that the litter trays are where they should use the bathroom. Of course, there will still be accidents every now and then but the vast majority of the time they will get it right. Typically by 4 weeks old they're almost 90% litter trained and we then proceed to start using the bathroom outside.
