We're all about slow, steady, and positive associations when pups are introduced to something new/potentially scary. We would never place a puppy in a crate, shut the door and just expect them to be okay with the confinement right from the start. We want the crate to be viewed as a fun & safe place for the puppies right from the beginning.
We allow the pups to freely come in and out of the crate as they please. Holly, my "shaper" demonstrates to the pups that the crate is nothing to be afraid of and they happily follow her lead. As they get older they will go into the crate on their own during our indoor playtime and learn to spend small amounts of time inside with the door closed while chewing their bones to create another positive association with crates.
