Early Scent Introduction (ESI)

Building puppy brains through the nose

Early Scent Introduction (ESI) is a concept developed by Dr. Gayle Watkins, a Golden Retriever breeder, scientist, researcher and competitor in a range of dog sports. Introducing natural scents early on can help:

  • Improve scenting ability
  • Enhance confidence and stability as adults
  • Reduce behavioural issues in the long term

Neurological Development

Dogs perceive the world primarily through scent and scent memory. Our human perception of the world is primarily visual. Very much the way we introduce mobiles in our baby's cribs to stimulate their development, strong scents offered to puppies in neonatal period stimulate their brains and form neural connections for scent memories. ESI has been proven to be an additional protocol alongside ENS that can greatly benefit a puppy's neurological development.

Exploring through scents

ESI, in a nutshell, is exposing young puppies to a new smell each day between days 3-16. The idea behind these brief daily exercises is to stimulate the areas of the brain primed for a developmental growth spurt.
